Wedding season has well and truly arrived!
As an event manager, everyone expects you to be able to handle your own big day with minimal stress– surely it’s just like any other event? Well that is what I thought too.
It is second nature for us ‘#eventprofs’ to choose a venue, suggest bands and come up with unique and creative ideas for your client but oh how that changes when it’s your own wedding.
Despite the excitement amongst friends and family, I managed to create a huge amount of expectation in my mind which meant STRESS. I became the bridezilla I vowed never to become.
After a much-needed pep talk to put everything into perspective, my fiancé and I sat down together and worked through what that we wanted from our big day. We then had a weekend with both sets of parents to chat through their expectations… finally it was all starting to take shape.
My biggest tip (which took a lot of tantrums and tears to work out) is that if you have 2 families who want to be involved in the planning, treat it like a business meeting: try and be the mediator and be prepared to compromise.
Emotions run high because everyone involved is trying to create a beautiful special day just for you!!!
Now for the step by step planning – this should help in some way, shape or form:
STEP 1 – TREASURE THE EXPERIENCE
I have loved having a wedding memory book/planner (If you enjoy reminiscing or are annoyingly organised like me, then you will too!
Here are a few suggestions:
STEP 2 – SET THE DATE
Pick a date.. (make sure the people you want there can make it then book it in). It really is as simple as that!
STEP 3 – NOW IT’S TIME FOR THE VENUE… OR HOW ABOUT A MARQUEE?
Here is some #inspo from the YOURgb team:
STEP 4 – THE CEREMONY, WHERE DO YOU EVEN START?
This was super easy for me as I have always wanted to get married in the local church but there are so many different options out there. Have a wee google and work out what is right for you both.
STEP 5 – THE OUTFIT
This was so much fun, my advice? Try on EVERYTHING! Go big or go home as they say.
I picked a few of the style that I liked, some in different styles and then I went big. Funnily enough the ones I thought I would suit, I didn’t. Having now spoken to a number of married friends, this is usually the case – be prepared to be surprised.
Don’t panic if you don’t find the one at your first appointment, it’s a bit like finding the perfect partner… you know when you know.
What is even better is that once you have picked your dress, you can then have a nosey at the bridesmaids stuff… sadly my sister said no to the peach puff ball but heyho..worth a shot!
For you Edinburgh locals here are some lovely dress shops that are definitely worth a trip:
For a touch of tartan why not check out the lads at 21stCentury Kilts!
STEP 6 – YUMMY FOOD
The world is your Oyster (no pun intended!)
Things have come a long way since the tradition of having afternoon tea in the village hall, there are now so many choices which makes it almost too difficult to choose. Both of our families love a good dinner party so we went for a proper sit down meal using the fabulous Bespoke Catering. The choices are endless; food trucks to bowl food to hog roasts. mmmm!
STEP 7 – ENTERTAINMENT
This is a maze (yes even for us!) decide what style of music you want and go from there. You will be inundated with options. Try speaking to people you know or even better, go and watch your band perform before confirming them.
Check out these legends that we LOVE:
STEP 8 – FLOWERS (WHO KNEW THEY COULD BE SO EXPENSIVE?)
This is where your budget can go CRAZY.
Start with ‘everything’ and then shave it down to bring it more in line with your budget.
The YOURgb team love a natural look! We couldn’t recommend the following suppliers more:
STEP 9 – TOUCHPOINTS
These are the fun bits… You can be as creative as you want. These little bits are your personal touch, the cherry on the cake that you’ve just spent hours pulling together and making perfect!
The team at YOURgb also LOVE bringing the fun to an event: Pimp your Prosecco, photobooths with fancy dress, and polaroid guest books – fun for guests but even better if it creates a wedding day momento for you to keep!
STEP 10 – ENJOY!
Time for the soppy bit. (love a cheesy line!)
Remember that whatever happens you are marrying the person you love. It is about you two and the start of your journey together.
Take time out of your big day to step back and watch everyone you love, celebrate YOU! How awesome is that?
Let us know how you get on – happy wedding day!!
